Bad Ass Texas Whiskey

Our buddy Winston Edwards from Balcones Distillery finally visited SCWC after a long hiatus. He updated us on their fine stable of American craft spirits and shared some special ones. There have been big changes and things are really getting bigger and better in Waco, Texas. So please join us to taste firsthand why this craft distillery garners so many awards and accolades. This will be a fun low-key evening tasting one of our favorite American distillers. We tasted their core range and several other “very special bottles” put together just for us for this event.

Before the tasting began there was a specialty Brimstone cocktail created by the Phoenix along with light appetizers.

Saturday, August 5th, 2017

We will be doing a small tasting on August 5th @ 6:00pm at a private residence in Westchester (just North of LAX). We'll be tasting 6 unique bourbons (+1 more) to explore the distinctive characteristics imparted by the distillation of different grains. All the bourbons are from the same distillery (Jim Beam) and have been aged at least 11 years.

The Line-Up:

1. High Rye

2. Whole Rolled Oat

3. Soft Red Wheat

4. Brown Rice

5. Triticale

6. Six Row Barley

7. Jim Bean Single Barrel (barrel #4-176)

We were able to source the complete Jim Beam® Harvest Bourbon Collection™ at a significant discount, hence the low cost for bourbon and pizza. The focus is to decide if mashbills are really as important as many distilleries claim, or if it's just something used for marketing. Will the flavor grain really shine? Will the oak overpower and render them mute? You'll have to taste to find out.

FOURSQUARE “Guardians of Rum”

hosted by Richard Seale and Altamar Brands

Thursday, August 17th, 2017

location: The Phoenix (8480 W 3rd St. Los Angeles, CA 90048)

For one special night we became the Southern California Rum Club, as Richard Seale of Four square Rum Distillery brought his passionate love for “no additive rum” to us. He dropped some serious rum knowledge and lead us through some of the best releases the distillery has put out. As many of you know, there is a movement toward a new rum classification system, and Richard is on the forefront of explaining it and pushing for its adoption. So please join us to taste firsthand why Four square is becoming a household name and to learn about the quickly changing rum landscape.

The tasting was as good as it gets, with the entire exceptional cask selection series and both European-only Velier bottlings, including the just released Triptych! We never try to hype events, but this is one that we will talk about for a long time. Even if you don’t like rum you will appreciate what Four square is doing from a whiskey-fan perspective. Trust us on this!

Thursday, Sept 14, 2017

location: The Phoenix (8480 W 3rd St. Los Angeles, CA 90048)

The Southern California Whiskey Club is extremely proud to have had John Campbell (Laphroaig Master Distiller) and Joe Jameson (Protector of the Peat) presenting a very special Master Class. This was an intimate, educational event created just for SCWC through the generosity of Beam Suntory and The Phoenix.

Deconstruction of Laphroaig Lore Master Class

With this Master Class, SCWC will experience individual components of Laphroaig Lore. Master distiller and whisky icon John Campbell will talk us through the process of creating this expression, tasting samples from various casks to illustrate the complexity of the different components for this release. We will also experience and discuss different cask finishes as they pertain to Lore and other Laphroaig expressions. The tasting will conclude with the 2017 Cairdeas release while speaking to the evolution of this annual bottling.

Important Event Notes + Times:

6:00 to 6:30pm: specialty Laphroaig cocktail and pretzel appetizer

6:30 to 7:30pm: Lore Master Class

7:30 to 10:00pm:  Friends of Laphroaig public event

The entire back patio of The Phoenix will become a party to celebrate John Campbell and Laphroaig. Everyone is invited to experience and learn more about the brand with additional Laphroaig expressions after the Master Class concludes.

Friends of Laphroaig Event Info

- Laphroaig cocktail hour

There will be a featured Laphroaig Select cocktail and shared appetizers. Additionally if any SCWC members are also Friends of Laphroaig members, we will be announcing an Opinions Welcome Competition for FOL’s. The winner of which will win a trip to Scotland!

One other note:

FOL’s have priority on the Virtual Distillery tour experience, as we’ll only have time for about 50 people to experience it during the 2 hour happy hour. If anyone from SCWC would like to experience this, we ask that they break away in pairs during the Lore Masterclass for the 4 minute video.
