Story of Whiskey “Master Class” +

The Complete Whiskey Course

presented by author Robin Robinson

Sunday, February 16, 2020

6:00pm - 8:00pm

location: Lost Property Bar (1704 Vine St, 90028)

Robin-Wide-Max.jpg

We are very excited to have our long-time friend Robin Robinson presenting his book “The Complete Whiskey Course” along with his Story of Whiskey “Master class”. In this hybrid one-man show and whiskey tasting, Robin takes us through the entire story of whiskey in one rapid-fire, crazy narrative that brings in the history of distillation, the roles of monks and alchemists, farmers and taxmen, Scottish lords and Appalachian hillbillies. From grains to glasses, Ireland to Kyoto to Bangalore and beyond, whiskey is more than the sum of its parts. Hold on to your (gl)asses, it’s an evening of bad standup comedy punctuated by drinking. Afterwards, Robin will be signing copies of his book for those in attendance. The first 10 to sign-up will receive a complimentary hardcover of The Complete Whiskey Course.

Turning a Blind Rye

a special 2 part event of twenty expressions

date: Thursday, August 13 + Thursday, August 20, 2020

time: 7:00pm - 8:30pm [PDT, Pacific Daylight Time]

location: Virtual Tasting via Zoom [in the safety of your home]

Turning-a-Blind-Rye-Wide.jpg

It's been a while since we did a comprehensive blind tasting, to make up for that, we're going all out. 20 1oz. rye samples will be sent out to do a blind tasting over the span of two Zoom meetings. The only hint we'll give you is that the proof goes up over the course of the tasting and the details will not be revealed until the end of each meeting. Some of these ryes are easy to find around $40, others are far more elusive and run $200+.

We suggest that you explore these a few at a time and make tasting notes at your own pace. Also, save some to re-visit during the Zoom meetings as a reference to see if we can find a group consensus.

We're going to send out all of the ryes at the same time (you will receive a box of 20 samples) and they'll be labeled into round 1 and 2. A scorecard and other details will be included in the package. This is going to be an intensely educational tasting and a chance to try some hard-to-find rye along with some standard expressions. This will be a small meeting of only 20 members.

A big thanks to Josh Peters for making this happen!

20 Blind Bourbons

a special 2 part event of twenty expressions

Tuesday, September 8 + Tuesday, September 15, 2020

20-Blind-Bourbon-Wide.jpg

In September we'll continue the blind tasting theme with another set of 20 1oz. samples we'll send out and taste over the span of two Zoom meetings. The only hint we'll give you is the proof goes up over the course of the tasting; details will not be revealed until the end of each round.

Like with the rye, we'll send out all 20 of the samples at the same time and they'll be labeled with round 1 and 2. A scorecard and other details will also be included. We suggest tasting the whiskeys before each round but don't drink all 10 of the samples beforehand. Make notes, get your initial ratings done and try to save about 1/2 for the live event.

Like the 20 Blind Ryes, the whiskeys in this massive tasting were ordered by proof. We did this to keep a cask strength whiskey from overpowering and killing the subtleties of lower proofed whiskey in the lineup. Outside of that knowledge, and that the whiskey was all going to be bourbon, the members had no other clues about what they were drinking. Also like with the 20 Blind Ryes event we had a full house for voting in round 1, but 3 members couldn’t make it for round 2 so I had to normalize the scores for the final-final results which I’ll include at the bottom. But first, let’s go round by round to see how the members ranked the different sets of 10.

Ohishi-Pack-Wide-Max.jpg

To celebrate our first cask release we are doing a bottle opening event as a group via Zoom.

We are excited to announce Southern California Whiskey Club’s first foray into an exclusive single cask bottling for the club. We used our close connections with Ohishi Distillery to bring the first, and only, Madeira cask directly from Japan to Los Angeles. It was a cherry-pick that Chris Uhde made possible from all of his visits to the distillery that he earmarked for SCWC. A few months ago we tried a few samples and this is the one we were enamored with. As soon as it arrived in Long Beach we had a taste from the first case that was opened — it was even better than we remembered it. We are very happy with the selection and how well JVS has been taking care of the club to offer this super rare bottling. We are doing this in conjunction with Gabrielle Dion @ The Mixing Glass so we can sell this release of only 180 bottles.

This is SCWC's first foray into the magical world of brandy. Brandy’s storied history, provenance, and complex flavors makes it a fantastic alternative for whiskey fans. It has many characteristics reminiscent of whiskey thanks to oak barrel aging and the use of distillation. If you are looking to expand your palate, we are recommending brandy; there’s something even the most ardent whiskey lover can appreciate. Distilled exclusively using craft methods on an antique cognac Pruhlo Charentais pot stills in Mendocino County, Germain-Robin is aged in Limousin oak barrels to highlight the flavors that make this California Brandy one of the most sought-after aged spirits.

Limestone Branch Distillery

presented by Steve Beam

date: Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020

time: 6:30pm - 8:00pm PT

location: Virtual Tasting via Zoom

Yellowstone-Wide.jpg

Southern California Whiskey Club is honored to have a special bourbon event with Steve Beam, all the way from Lebanon, Kentucky, walk us through their process and plans for the future at Limestone Branch Distillery.

Steve and Paul Beam started Limestone Branch Distillery in 2010 with the goal of reclaiming their family’s distilling heritage. The Beams trace their lineage back seven generations to Jacob Beam on one side of the family and four generations to J.W. Dant on the other. Their great-grandfather, Minor Case Beam, was the original owner of the Yellowstone brand. The family created Yellowstone Bourbon in 1872 and seven generations later, the brothers have started their own chapter of the family history book. While ramping up their own production, Paul & Steve are very open about their signature blends of whiskey to fund the distillery until their own whiskey has had time to fully mature.

The 2020 Yellowstone Limited Edition boasts a stunning new bottle, similar to Yellowstone Bourbon, which has been around since 1872. Minor Case Rye is a 2 year old straight rye that has been aged for additional time by Limestone Branch in Sherry casks. We will also get to taste the new Bowling & Burch Gin as a special treat. This expression traces its roots back to the Beam’s ancestors, the Bowlings and the Burches, who emigrated from England to the Eastern United States in the mid 1600s.

1. Bowling & Burch Gin
2. Minor Case Rye

We are excited to welcome Raj and the team at Glass Revolution Imports to present an exciting new Irish distillery. Their first releases just hit the USA markets we’ll be one of the first clubs to taste the lineup. Influenced by the world’s greatest winemakers, Waterford Distillery is obsessively bringing the same intellectual drive, methodology & rigor to single malt whisky. Using 100% Irish barley, their new Single Farm Origin series is an uber-provenance range of limited edition natural whiskies that explore Irish terroir one farm, once place, at a time.

Although it remains a contentious subject in the world of spirits, Waterford is a true believer in the presence of terroir within a distilled liquid. In an effort to fully explore Irish terrior, founder and CEO Mark Reynier (ex-Bruichladdich) utilizes proprietary methodology and precision aimed at the subject.

Production begins with a mash filter as opposed to the more traditional mash tub, and fermentation times upwards of 5 days—almost twice as long as the industry standard. All distillates are matured in a combination of first-fill French and American oak. After a minimum of three years in the cooperage, the liquid is married and bottled at 50% ABV, devoid of coloring, chill-filtration or any other form of adulteration.
